Have you booked a flight to Rome and are wondering what’s the most affordable way to get into the city center? You have come to the right place! Below you can find everything you need to know about how to get from Rome airport to city center, from both airports that service Rome.
How to get from Fiumicino airport to Rome city center?
Fiumicino airport is about 40 kilometers outside of Rome’s city center and it takes about 40 minutes to get from the airport to the city center by car. However, driving in Rome is not a good idea as the traffic is crazy and there are too many rules to follow. Trust me, it will end in a disaster. Public transportation is the way to go so see the best options below.
Train
The train station at Fiumicino airport is technically not situated in the airport but it is reachable by several walkways. Just follow the sign for the train and you will be there in about 10-15 minutes walking from the terminal. There are three different trains to take to get to the center of Rome.
Leonardo express train
This is probably the most popular way to get from the Fiumicino airport to the center of Rome as it is a one-stop train. The train leaves every 15 minutes and costs 14€ one-way (May 2022). The journey will take approximately half an hour.
Tickets can be purchased at the airport train station ticket window and self-service ticket machines.
You can purchase a ticket at getyourguide.com.
You can also use Trainline or Trenitalia to purchase tickets.
Frecciarossa train
These trains only leave two times a day at 11:08 and at 15:08. This is a fast train that, after Roma Termini, continues on to Florence. This train ride will also take about 30 minutes and the cost is around 19.50€ one-way.
Tickets can be purchased at the airport train station ticket window and self-service ticket machines. You can also use Trainline or Trenitalia to purchase tickets.
Regional train
These trains are slower and stop at many different stations, but actually NOT at the central station of Rome (termini). The Rome stops include Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina so if your accommodation is situated near these stations this might be a good option for you. For some, this option may actually be quicker than the express train, particularly those staying on the outskirts of town, such as Trastevere (just 26 min), or even in the city center, such as Campo de Fiori or the Pantheon area. The price is 8€ one way and it leaves every 15 minutes during periods of heavy traffic.
Tickets can be purchased at the airport train station ticket window and self-service ticket machines. You can also use Trainline or Trenitalia to purchase tickets.
NOTE – Be aware that no trains run from the Fiumicino airport between 11:23 pm and 5:58am. If your flight is scheduled to arrive between these times, consider booking a car in advance.
Bus coach
There are many bus companies that run from Rome Fiumicino airport to Rome Termini station and this is also the cheapest option to get into Rome from Fiumicino airport. There are four different services to consider and most of them will take you to either Termini Station or a nearby location. Terravision, T.A.M., and S.I.T. buses run several times during the day, but the Cotral bus is the only one that runs nightly from 1:15 am – 5:00 am.
S.I.T. Bus
This is my recommended choice as it has the best ratings of all the bus coach services. This bus will take you to Piazza Indipendenza which is near Termini Station in about 50 minutes on average.
Ticket Prices: €8 per person | €12 for a return ticket
Availability: Daily from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm
T.A.M. Bus
This company is also a good choice. This bus will take you to the Termini Station in about 45 minutes on average.
Ticket Prices: €10 per person | €15 for a return ticket
Availability: Daily from 8 am – 11:30 pm
Terravision Bus
This bus will take you to the Termini Station in about 45 minutes on average.
Ticket Prices: €7 per person (online) | €12 for a return ticket (online)
Availability: Daily from 5:35 am – 11:00 pm
Cotral Bus
This company also runs at night so this is your best option if you arrive very late or very early. This bus will take you to the Piazza dei Cinquecento near Termini Station in about 50 minutes on average.
Ticket Prices: €5 per person (online) | €7 on the bus
Availability: Nightly from 1:15 am – 5:00 am
Shared shuttle
If you’re not in a hurry and you don’t mind sharing a ride with other people, you might want to consider this relatively low-cost option. This is often a more worry-free trip to Rome as you will be dropped off at your accommodation or at least at a very nearby plaza. But as you are sharing this van with other people you should be aware that it can take a long time depending on when it is your time to be dropped off. Taking a shuttle is often affordable though as you are sharing the costs with others and you can most often book and pay in advance.
Ticket Prices: €30-€50 per person
Availability: Daily, whenever you want
Duration: 1-2 hours on average
This may include luggage limitations.
Taxi
Taking a taxi is definitely the most expensive option to get into Rome from the Fiumicino airport unless you are a bigger group of people. It also involves a good amount of risks and uncertainties considering if the meter is used, what the fixed rate is, and if the taxi company is even registered correctly. Here are what you should consider before entering a taxi outside of the Fiumicino airport.
- You can find several taxis lined up outside the airport. The first thing you have to make sure of is that the taxi is registered in Rome and not Fiumicino as the ones from Fiumicino don’t have the same rules applied to them and can therefore scam you.
- The fixed-rate from Fiumicino airport to Rome center is 48 euros, but this only applies if your accommodation is inside of the Aurelian Walls of Rome. Please check this before you enter a taxi.
- Do not pay the driver until after you have gotten your luggage out of the back of the car. When you pay the driver, take the money out and hold it, asking him or her to get change while you hold the money. It has unfortunately become more common that taxi drivers or private drivers to take the money and then insist that they didn’t get paid enough.
How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome city center?
Ciampino airport is situated about 16 kilometers outside of Rome’s city center, and it takes about 25 minutes to get from the airport to the city center by car. As mentioned before, driving yourself into the city center is not ideal, so here are a few alternatives for public transportation you can consider.
Train
Taking the train to the center of Rome is not the most convenient option but probably the cheapest. There is no train station at the airport but in the city of Ciampino, which means you have to get a bus to the train station and thereafter the train into the city center. The buses and trains are somewhat infrequent and do not run late. However, if you have time and have no problem with taking several modes of transportation, it is very affordable as the bus costs € 1.20 and the train fare is € 1.50. The journey will take you around one hour.
Bus coach
As Ciampino airport is smaller than Fiumicino airport there are only three bus coach companies available. Terravision, S.I.T. Bus, and Rome airport bus all service during the day. The S.I.T Bus station is located outside of terminal 3, the Terravision buses are found at the bus station, stop number 1 and the Rome Airport Bus station can be found at stop number 2. There is also an option with Atral local bus that you can take to the southern metro station of Rome – Anagnina Metro Station. As it is quite a complicated journey I will not explain it thoroughly, but now you know that it exists. Also, be aware that there are no buses available after midnight.
S.I.T Bus
This is my recommended choice as it has the best ratings of all the bus coach services. This bus will take you to 5 Via Marsala which is near Termini Station in about 40 minutes on average. It leaves every 30 minutes-60 minutes.
Ticket Prices: €6 per person | €8 for a return ticket
Availability: Daily from 7:45 am and 11:15 pm
Terravision Bus
This bus will take you to the Termini Station in about 40 minutes on average. It leaves every 30 minutes.
Ticket Prices: €4 per person (online) | €7 for a return ticket (online)
Availability: Daily from 8:15 am to 12:15 am.
Rome Airport bus
This bus will take you to the Termini Station in about 40 minutes on average. It leaves every 60 minutes.
Ticket Prices: €5.90 per person (online) | €7.90 on the bus
Availability: Daily from 4:00 am until 22:50 am
