Ponza is a summer dream destination with 40 km of rugged coastline with coves, beaches, and limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. You can not visit this island without taking a dip in the sea or spending some time at the beach. Most of the beaches on the island can be visited from land but some beaches are only reachable by boat. Read on to find out the best beaches in Ponza that you just have to see.

The best beaches in Ponza

Reachable by land

Ponza is quite a small island, and the main thing to do there is to hang out on the beaches. There are more beaches on this island than you probably have time to explore but here is a list of the best ones that are reachable by land, either by car or walking. You can also visit these beaches by boat of course!

Spiaggia di Frontone

This is the most visited beach on the island – Spiaggia di Frontone. It is a wide and long pebble beach with a few bars, restaurants, and also a nightclub, so avoid this beach if you want some peace and quiet. Nestled between the mountains the crystal clear waters are calm and smooth to enter.

Cala Feola

Cala Feola is the only sandy beach on the island and it is one of the easiest ones to reach by land. The little beach has an amazing view overlooking the bay where fishing boats are docked and you can also glance at the natural swimming pools just aside.

Piscine Naturali

Piscine Naturali is the natural swimming pool that is situated just next to Cala Feola. This is not a beach per se but it is a stunning swimming area of rock pools and reefs protected by white tuff cliffs so the water is calm and clear.

Cala Fonte

In the northernmost part of the island, you can find one of the best beaches in all of Ponza. It is actually more of a natural pool guarded by a giant rock formation, which makes it a great harbor for fishermen and you can see many fishing boats resting in the shallow waters. The walk down to the beach can be a bit rocky so keep that in mind if visiting.

Cala dell’Acqua

Cala dell’Acqua is situated on the western side of Ponza and the water here is truly incredible. This little rocky beach is surrounded by rocks in several different colors which gives this beach a jaw-dropping view.

Reachable by boat

When you are in Ponza, you really should go on a boat tour or hire your own boat. There are a few diffferent tour available to book online, check them out!

You just have to explore this island by boat, and you actually don’t need any license to drive a small boat there, and it is a really fun experience. The island is surrounded by calas, which are small bays where you can stop for a swim and most times there is a small beach you can swim to. Below are some calas you should check out when you are in Ponza.

Spiaggia di Lucia Rosa

You will find this beautiful beach on the west side of the island. The crystal clear water is usually a bit calmer here than at other parts of the island and the beach made out of stones is surrounded by high picturesque cliffs.

Chiaia di Luna

It is not hard to see why Chiaia di Luna was the most famous beach on the Island, as the cliffs there are truly remarkable. Those have though posed a security risk and there have been some deaths at this beach and it is therefore now closed. You are safest to admire this beach from afar, either from the sea or stop by the viewpoint for an amazing sunset vista.

Bagno Vecchio

This little beach with a cove is situated on the southeastern part of the island, quite close to the port of Ponza. Go and explore the cave and why not snorkel a little since the water here is crystal clear and many fish swim around in this area. Don’t sunbathe at the beach for too long though as there have been small stones falling from the cliffs. But it is a perfect spot to dock for a little while.

Cala Felce

On the northeastern tip of the island, you can find Cala Felce which is a beach cove that is known for its golden rock cliffs and yellow seabed, which stands out from the rest of the beaches on this island. This is another good spot for snorkeling and there is also a Cistercian monastery that can be reached by boat.

Cala del Core

This beach is located in the eastern part of Ponza and has a rocky sandbed and crystal-clear waters. The rock formations are incredible and you have to look out for the incision shaped like a heart!

Cala Gaetano

Cala Gaetano is a nice beach cove in the northeastern part of the island where you will find some deeper water, still good for snorkeling though. The rocks at the beach form some natural pools that are perfect to chill around in.

Cala Cecata

This cala doesn’t have a beach, but instead some rocks with shallow water that attracts some sunbathers, not many at all even in the high season. There is a little cafe on wooden stilts where you can buy some refreshments and you can also hire sunbeds if you would like. Quite a cool spot actually.

Cala Inferno

Cala inferno is another swimming spot that doesn’t offer a beach to spend some time on. Instead, jump off your boat and snorkel for a bit. If you know where to look you might find an old staircase on the rocks that were made in the middle ages. Because of its age, it is not used anymore, and I think that is for the best.

Le Formiche

Situated about 1 km outside of the shore of Ponza you can find some rocks in the water that are called Le Formiche which is translated to the ants. The water around these rocks is breathtaking and it is the perfect spot to snorkel for a while.

Arco Naturale

Arco Naturale is a must visit if you are on the island of Ponza. This cliff, which is shaped like an arch and comes out of the water, is really fascinating and therefore it is a famous spot for boats to dock the entire day. Make sure you come there quite early in the day so the place won’t be too crowded when you swim through the arch!

Grotte di Pilato

This little grotto is situated close to Ponza and is a perfect swimming spot if you like clear blue water and some history to discover. These caves were artificially made more than 2000 years ago and people were actually living there. Nowadays the caves are abandoned or are they? Let’s go and explore!
